The only difference was this was Slayer's third album, the previous two, '\u003cem\u003eShow No Mercy\u003c\/em\u003e' and '\u003cem\u003eHell Awaits\u003c\/em\u003e', both plagued by rough production which thwarted Slayer from sounding as brutal as they should have been. '\u003cem\u003eReign in Blood\u003c\/em\u003e' put matters straight, as\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRick Rubin's\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eproduction put them over the top, with a precise and clean sound few have ever topped. This is the way to make a thrash album. Ten tracks clocking in at twenty-eight minutes, all fast, an easy way to make an impact and a point.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOvernight acts like\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCeltic Frost\u003c\/strong\u003e,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBathory\u003c\/strong\u003e, and\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDestruction\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewere made to look as crude as they were, while\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eExodus\u003c\/em\u003e,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eMetallica\u003c\/em\u003e, and\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eAnthrax\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eseemed tame by comparison.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHanneman\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eand\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eKing\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eestablished themselves as thrash's premier guitar duo, and rightfully so, the level of twisted genius running through \"\u003cem\u003eNecrophobic\u003c\/em\u003e\", \"\u003cem\u003eCriminally Insane\u003c\/em\u003e\", and \"\u003cem\u003eAngel of Death\u003c\/em\u003e\" something they themselves had trouble topping.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe main reason\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eSlayer distinguished themselves from most was their ability to retain melody amongst such a vicious rampage. Every song has a discernible hook and melody line, something that was lacking from many, particularly Euro bores. Whether this is the greatest thrash album, I don't know, it's in the top five certainly,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eSlayer equaling this in many ways with '\u003cem\u003eDivine Intervention\u003c\/em\u003e'.
