Preceded by a set of live demos at Phonogram studios, XTC knew exactly what it wanted from a fourth album – even down to the original album title: “Work Under Pressure” (which helps make more sense of the sleeve photo also), prior to setting foot in The Townhouse for the main recordings. The switch to “Black Sea” was made only to allay the then band manager’s sensitivity to the title being interpreted as a criticism of his management style. More Power Rock than Power Pop, when released in Sept. 1980, the album became XTC’s first Top 20 chart album in the UK, narrowly missed the Top 40 (No.41) in the USA where it was issued in November, but spent an impressive 24 weeks on the Billboard chart nonetheless. Generals And Majors & Towers Of London provided twin back to back Top 40 UK singles released either side of the album in a tight eight weeks’ release space in September & October, while Sgt. Rock propelled the band back into the UK top 20 in January 1981. Andy Partridge recalls it as an optimistic time for the band. Dave Gregory’s arrival on guitar (replacing organist Barry Andrews who left following the release of Go2) marked a shift in style with the group now configured as a twin guitar/bass/drums line-up. Despite an endless touring schedule much time was spent honing new material. Both Partridge and Colin Moulding were growing in confidence as songwriters – this album did much to further their reputation for peerless post-punk pop tunes. But it was also Steve Lillywhite and engineer Hugh Padgham’s ability to give appropriate studio support and recording expertise to the more expansive pieces such as “Roads Girdle The Globe” and “Complicated Game” that helped to bring a new level of maturity to the overall feel of the release. Issued at the start of September, Drums and Wires entered the UK Albums Chart where it remained for a total of seven weeks, accompanied by another first for the band, a Top 20 UK (and international) hit single in album lead track “Making Plans for Nigel”. Bringing together the A-sides from the band’s first, fiercely inventive years (including the US A side version of ‘Ten Feet Tall’ and soundtrack rarity ‘Take This Town’), the collection captures XTC in an era where many new bands would have sacrificed future first-borns to have one decent songwriter. This made all of their singles, the hits and the non-hits alike, one of the most distinguished catalogues of the 7” artform, from the (planned for end of ’77, actually released January 1978) ‘Science Friction’ through to the 1992 almost release of ‘Wrapped in Gray’ the key single from “Nonsuch” which was caught up in and lost via the turmoil of Virgin’s takeover by EMI.

Listened to now, as a collection, it’s the pace of development of the songwriters in a period of a little over three years that impresses, while the arrival of Dave Gregory following the departure of Barry Andrews gave the band a confident musical stability that enabled it to grow rapidly.
