Lee Morgan
Lee Morgan - Introducing Lee Morgan
Recorded in 1956 when Lee Morgan was only seventeen, this Savoy debut captures the Philadelphia trumpeter already speaking the language of hard bop with startling fluency. Surrounded by seasoned figures including Hank Mobley and Hank Jones, Morgan plays with the bright, clarion tone and fearless attack of someone who seems entirely untroubled by his youth. 'Hank's Shout' bursts forward on a buoyant groove, Morgan's trumpet cutting through the ensemble with gleaming authority while Mobley's tenor answers in smoky counterpoint. Later, 'Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise' settles into a slower glow, the young trumpeter stretching the melody with poised, burnished lyricism that hints at the formidable voice soon to come.
