After KMD (his first group)'s 1994 sophomore album Bl_ck Bstrds was shelved by Elektra in 1994 and his blood brother Subroc (one half of the sibling rap duo) passed away, surviving frontman Zev Love X mutated into the MC Avenger known as MF Doom and the Rap world is better for it. This 19-cut deep album is ridiculously dope, in a bizarro Ol' Dirty Bastard kind of way. Doom sounds either high or drunk on most of the tracks, his self-produced beats are gritty, and his rhyme styles are almost indecipherable. On arguably the best track, "Rhymes Like Dimes," Doom weaves some pointed lyrics through his abstract wordplay, spitting 'only in America could you find a way to earn a healthy buck / And still keep your attitude on self-destruct.' Who You Think I Am? features Doom's crew M.onster I.sland C.zars, while on "?" he trades hot verses with former Columbia artist Kurious Jorge. Doom's avant-garde ghetto-rhyme philosophies take even more intentionally weird twists on 'Tick, Tick...' where he and guest MC MF Grimm's flows warble over a rhythm track whose tempo speeds up and slows down continually. The comic-book themed skits, will help take you deep into the mind of an MC who is as otherworldly as they come. Presented by Ma Dukes and compiled by DJs Alien Villainz (fellow Detroit natives who worked closely with Dilla), Dillatronic contains over 40 rare instrumentals that showcase Dilla’s undeniable electronic influences. J Dilla’s music was impacted by the diverse musical history of Detroit - the birthplace of Techno and one of the most important cities in the history of electronic music. “You can hear it in songs like ‘Raise It Up’ for Slum Village or ‘Make It Hurt’ for Busta Rhymes,” says Young RJ (Dilla’s protégé and member of Slum Village). “The Detroit influence is part of what gave him an edge in production.” With today’s music sounding more electronic than ever, Dillatronic has a shockingly contemporary feel. “These tracks are still ahead of their time sonically,” explains RJ. “The things producers are doing now, Dilla did that 15 years ago.”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0986/1426/products/image_01a881dc-9573-4673-9410-10cea601d4a4.jpg?v=1587838885
j-dilla-dilla-s-delights-vol-1-green-vinyl
J Dilla - Dilla’s Delights Vol 1 (Green Vinyl)

After releasing Motor City, The King of Beats Vol 1 & 2, the Ma Duke's Collection, and the Jay Dee aka King Dilla beat compilations all over the last year or so, the world is graced with yet another stellar posthumous release, a two volume beat tape from J Dilla, Dilla's Delights Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. A mix of styles (including deviations into blues and gospel), 'Play' also has the unique distinction of having all 18 of its tracks licensed for use in film, television and advertising.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0986/1426/products/image_197faa91-1687-46c0-9459-3f539b5fa5a2.jpg?v=1589886820
sojo-soul-the-nebulous-concept
Sojo Soul - The Nebulous Concept

Bath Based Sojo Soul, return with their second long player...

With a history of music production spanning three decads, it's easy to hear the inspirations of Sojo Soul's diverse musical background shining through.

His accomplishments include the infamous club classic 'Schudelfloss' under the name Dr. Atomic, Guerilla Records and the 'Hold On EP' which features on several of the Bar Grooves compilations, Seamless Recordings.

This refreshing new album begins with some laid back, classy and hypnotic grooves, each one beautifully arranged with just the right amount of emotionally charged piano and strings. Recorded throughout 2003 - a year which, between the two of them (under various aliases), saw more than eight releases featuring their work. When Madvillainy was released in March 2004 it became obvious that the best was saved for last as MF Doom's unpredictable lyrical style fits quite nicely within Madlib's unconventional beat orchestrations. Twenty-two short and blunted tracks bang out mythical stories of villains and urban (anti) heroes trying to make it through with their ganja and wits still intact -- each flows together in a comic book fashion sometimes segued with vignettes sampled from 1940s movies and broadcasts or left-field marijuana-toting skits. Madvillainy's strength lies in its mix between seemingly obtuse beats, samples, MCing, and some straight-up hip-hop bumping. Take "Accordion" for example. A wacky accordion sample loops throughout a slow-paced beat and lazy bassline while Doom flies through almost unaware of the background at times. Or "Raid," which features a beat that seems to be so out of time or step with a traditional hip-hop direction. But Doom sits quite comfortable within its frame and sets up Medaphor for a slick guest appearance. 'The Pleasure Principle' is Gary Numan's third studio album (and debut under his own name) and marked the point where he became a huge international solo star, reaching the Top 10 in the US with 'Cars' and Top 20 with the album itself. Given the conservative nature of the music scene in America at that time and the fact that the LP didn't even feature any guitars, let alone conventional song structures ('Cars' doesn't even have a chorus), this is one of those special moments in pop music when a new idea breaks through all the boundaries. 'The Pleasure Principle' pioneered electronic pop music on a new scale, becoming a much bigger hit worldwide than Kraftwerk or anything from the Bowie / Eno Berlin trilogy. And the fact that it was so different and had such a major impact in America (crystallized when Numan performed 'Cars' and 'Praying To The Aliens' in front of 40 million people on Saturday Night Live) meant that there was a direct link from 'The Pleasure Principle' to the new musical forms that were born in the USA over the next decade - namely hip hop, industrial and techno.

Ironman is the debut solo album by Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ghostface Killah, released in 1996.
